Today was somewhat of an exception to my normal sleeping habits. I didn't get to bed until late the night before, but had to wake up in order to dig up my septic with my brother, as it was scheduled to be pumped today. After waking around 9:00AM, and immediately drinking my liter of water, I was set to go! After about 20 minutes of digging, the job was done, but with the extra bit of energy I had from my healthy intake of water, I decided to filter some of the compost I've been saving for the past few months. I usually just store fruit and vegetable skins/leftovers in plastic bags or containers in the freezer, and when I accumulate an abundance, I bring them outside to plastic compost bins I have. I really hope to start a garden next summer to grow some of my own seasonal organic fruits and vegetables, and having my own fresh compost seems opportune, given my recent foray into more live foods.
9:30AM
-Early morning snack-
(no picture here as I wasn't too hungry - just grabbed food until I was satisfied)
1 sm. Banana 90 cal
6-7 Grapes 30 cal
~1/4 Cup Raisins 100 cal
Total 220 cal
After settling back inside and warming up, I decided to get a few more hours of sleep so the day wouldn't inevitably drag on. Upon waking, I was a bit dehydrated so I had another quick glass of water, but was ready to concoct my first meal. You'd be so surprised how hydrated fruits and veggies can make you simply on their own. They retain a lot of water, which makes you think about all the water I'm getting from them, plus all the water I'm drinking separately. Then considered normal American eating habits, and how much water your average person consumes daily. Then think about those who only drink sodas and teas! It's crazy to think that some people's bodies run so dehydrated.
1:15PM
-Green Choco-Banana Milkshake-
4 md. Banana (frozen) 400 cal
3 1/2 Cups Baby Romaine 25 cal
1 Cup Water
3.5 Tbsp. Cacao Powder 85 cal
2 sm. Banana (sliced) 180 cal
4Tbsp. Cacao Nibs 100 cal
Total 790 cal
This made about 1 liter of "milkshake," which was about 2 FULL to the brim glasses. I call it a milkshake because the frozen bananas make an ice-creamy texture, and when mixing with water, it gives the same consistency as a traditional milkshake. Basically just blend the frozen bananas here with the romaine and water, adding the cacao after you get the desired consistency, and top with some banana slices and cacao nibs. Then mix throughout and eat! A yum way to start any day! It took me about 45 minutes to put down both glasses of this awesome green drink, but I was full for a while.
4:30PM
-Green Banana, Apple, & Orange Smoothie w/Cucumber slices-
4 sm. Banana 360 cal
1 md. Apple 95 cal
1 lg. Orange 85 cal
1 1/2 Stalks Kale 30 cal
3/4 Cup Water
3 1/4 Cup Ice (cubed)
1 Cucumber (sliced) 30 cal
Total 600 cal
I still wasn't much in the mood for chewing, so I opted for another green drink. Once you get in the grove of this live lifestyle, you realize how much easier it can be to drink your foods rather than chew them all. The motion of chewing is said to actually produce as much as four times the amount of serotonin than what our bodies produce when regularly awake. It is a natural stress reliever for our bodies, so as you can imagine, chewing becomes extremely important as it's our bodies' idea of noting that we are being satisfied by consuming food. So it's important to chew your drinks also. Try to "Chew your juice, [and] drink your food." This information, and quote is in reference to a video on YouTube wherein food guru David Wolfe is interviewed about his diet and general views on RAW food. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwuVD8gg6jw
This made about 1 1/4 liters of green goodness, so that worked out to about 2 1/2 nicely sized full glasses. This one is pretty simple. Just combine all ingredients and blend well until most of the kale is in small enough pieces to drink. Took a little over an hour for me to get this monster down alongside the cucumber. I've found cucumber slices and avocado slices (when in moderation due to their high fat content) to be amongst my favorite hydrating snacks to include next to any smoothie - it helps satisfy more of that chewing motion discussed above, and to be honest, it'd be hard for me to get through a whole day on only smoothies and green drinks.
-Exercise-
It wasn't until about 8:30PM that I decided I needed to do something with all the energy I had bottled up inside of me from that earlier monster green smoothie. I set up a little space on my floor and started doing random stretching for my legs and back. Flexibility is something I feel my body is very capable of, but by not ever testing my body's abilities, I've become very docile - something I plan to fix. After about 25 minutes of a decent amount of stretching, I still had lots of energy, so I decided to go for a small jog around the block. It's probably only a quarter of a mile, but that is more than I've done in a long time! Although skateboarding is a full body workout, it's not impact running. It works your legs in a completely different way and it was a nice change of pace to get my body used to the new stresses I'm going to be putting it through for the next 30 days. Coming back inside, I made sure to drink a glass of water, and then after a short cool down could feel an urge for a snack coming.
9:30PM
-Goji Berries and Banana & Strawberry Slices-
~1/8 Cup Goji Berries 50 cal
3 sm. Banana (sliced) 270 cal
8 md. Strawberry (sliced) 30 cal
Total 350 cal
I grabbed about a half of a handful of Goji Berries, then 10 minutes later prepared a small fruit salad. After eating the bananas and strawberries, I was still craving something extra. I guess I was a bit more hungry than I originally thought. I reached for another handful of dried fruit and some more calorie-dense seeds.
-Snack-
(no picture, it was just grab and eat again)
~1/4 Cup Raisins 100 cal
~1 1/2 Tbsp. Sunflower Seeds 120 cal
Total 220 cal
I thought this was going to be the last meal of the day for me as I was a bit tired from that short jog. After a few more hours of browsing the internet, hunger reared it's head again. Another quick, albeit very calorie light snack was in order.
-Cucumber and Apple Slices-
1 Cucumber (sliced) 30 cal
1 sm. Apple (sliced) 70 cal
Total 100 cal
This light 100 calorie snack is by no means enough to provide you with energy to do much. I wasn't looking for energy at this point though - more of something to just fill up my stomach. And look at how much food that is! That entails a lot of chewing for just 100 calories. People need to get away from the potato chips. This is why people overeat! It's our brains telling us to continue chewing (what are bodies are naturally used to) even though those fatty chips have, possibly up to, 10 times the amount of calories in them.
A lot of misconception about the RAW diet comes from people thinking an entire meal entails eating 1 cucumber and 1 apple. That may be true per say, but as you can see, I'm eating well over the traditional 3 meals per day. More along the lines of 5-6+, with snacks in between. I contribute my past few months of learning about live foods and learning my body's needs as a major benefit, which will help me throughout this 30 day trial. I've read a lot of trials where the person undertaking them is so new to the idea of only eating live foods that they try to eat 3 huge calorie dense meals throughout the day with a snack or two when needed. As you can see, my first two meals were pretty large, and when you consider some of the smaller snacks, combined they end up being as dense as a standard "meal." The difference is I don't eat all this food in 10-20 minutes. It takes me nearly an hour on average to consume one of these "meals."

As you can see, I'm just a bit under the 80/10/10 ratio I need to be at in regards to protein. Otherwise, the numbers look good.
I hope the format is as visually pleasing to read as it is easy to write. From Day 2 and onwards, the text will be far less, with more of the essential info available. Since it was Day 1, I wanted anyone who may be following to get an idea of where I'm coming from with what I'm writing, since I'm new to blogging
I also want to take the time to note that this is actually my third day in a row completely RAW. A few days before the trial started, I decided to set the date and allow myself some adjusting time, focusing on much more live foods than my normal 66%-75%. In those few days, my body just decided to stick with the good stuff, so after this trial is up, I will officially have done a 32 Day Raw trial! I'm going to complete the full 30 days regardless, for the sake of completeness for the blog. Just note that some of my body's cleansing reactions may be a day or two off. Specifically, the night just prior to Day 1, I noticed a repulsive greasy, almost potato chip-like smell emitting from my skin. My face became very oily and I believe my body is already attempting to cleanse itself after just 3 days, pushing all of the built up residues from cooked foods out of my body.
And that concludes Day 1!
